Swaddle Your iPad In Bernie Madoff's Pants

Upset that you missed the chance to snap some of disgraced financier Bernie Madoff's spoils at auction? Well, don't fret: You can now own a piece of his Ralph Lauren chinos or khaki pants from J. Crew. The company Frederick James sells limited, one-of-a-kind iPad cases made from Madoff's cast-off trousers. The price tag? Between $250 and $500.

An initial batch of these unique accessories, reports Style.com, were fashioned from a navy Dior sweater and a vest from Bergdorf Goodman. They sold out in a day. "A Wall Street lawyer bought five at $500 apiece to give as Christmas gifts," writes Style.com. Hmm.
I'm a bit fascinated by the people who buy these pieces of Madoff's and why. Is it to own a piece of history, as Frederick James founder John Vaccaro suggests? Is it some form schadenfreude -- a kind of perverse glee of acquiring those luxuries that Madoff is no longer privileged enough to own? Or is it an obsession with wealth and power? (The fact that these discarded materials from Madoff's closet are in turn being used to carry and protect an iPad -- an expensive, exclusive item itself -- is also interesting.)
