SBY tells party members not to blame each other

Democratic Party chief patron Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told party members at a party national meeting Saturday not to blame each other for the party’s current political turmoil.

“We should not give up in the face of the current tests and challenges. We don’t need to blame each other, that would not be a smart political move,” he said, referring to graft allegations leveled at party chairman Anas Urbaningrum by ousted party treasurer M. Nazaruddin.

Yudhoyono acknowledged that the party he founded suffered from internal weaknesses, but encouraged members not to be disheartened.

“We shall review events and improve ourselves,” he said, adding that the party was built from nothing, relied only on iron will, unity, solidarity, hard work and the help of God.

The live broadcast of an Internet video call between Nazaruddin and journalist Iwan Piliang on Friday night shook the party after Nazaruddin, a fugitive graft suspect, added to his earlier allegations by expounding on how Anas channeled funds through illegal means from state enterprises to finance his bid to be party chair in 2009.

Nazaruddin also claimed he had been shot at while on the run by an identified man after a telephone interview with a local TV station earlier this week. (rpt)
